"The measure of a leader should not only be what they achieve while in office, but also whether they leave behind an institution capable of succeeding without them."
Early in his leadership journey, Ivan Matthias Mulumba was presenting a team assignment when a colleague advised him to replace "I did this" with "We did this."
This lesson taught him that leadership is about building teams that achieve together, not claiming individual credit. It still guides his approach today.
Ivan is a Chartered Valuation Surveyor and Certified Valuer of Uganda with nearly 15 years of experience advising governments, companies, investors, financial institutions, and institutional landholders on land, infrastructure, and capital risk. As Principal at Corundum & Associates, he addresses complex land and tenure issues, strategic advisory, investment, and due diligence, helping organisations navigate financial, regulatory, and institutional risks. He has authored five books and serves on the RICS East Africa Regional Advisory Board.
His professional experience has shown him the value of considering long-term impacts. With an MBA in Finance and a background spanning government, institutional landholding, private practice, and strategic advisory, he offers an independent, commercially grounded perspective. He translates complex information into clear, actionable advice and constructively challenges assumptions.
His leadership experience has reinforced this perspective. As President of the Rotary Club of Rubaga Lake View, the club achieved its highest-ever contribution to The Rotary Foundation and secured full project funding through new partnerships. For Ivan, this demonstrates the impact of mobilising people, building partnerships, and turning shared vision into measurable results.
He believes leadership also requires discipline. One key lesson is that good intentions cannot replace proper procedure. Leaders must respect governance, remain accountable, and make decisions that protect the institution over individual interests.
He sees succession as one of today's biggest governance challenges. Many organisations risk becoming dependent on long-serving individuals, which complicates transitions and increases risk. Ivan believes leaders should develop others, prepare successors, and ensure no one becomes indispensable.
His approach to ethical decision-making is intentional. He uses his values as a moral compass, carefully considers facts and implications, seeks counsel when needed, and asks whether he would be comfortable with his decisions under scrutiny.
Service is central to his leadership philosophy. As a Rotarian, Ivan believes leaders should step forward, accept responsibility, and use their abilities to create positive change. He views LEAD similarly: as a community that develops people for greater responsibility and strengthens the institutions they serve.
He aims to contribute his expertise in board governance, ethics, succession, land and investment risk, ESG, and stakeholder management. He also mentors younger professionals, helping them turn technical expertise into strategic value and prepare for future leadership and board roles.
For Ivan, leadership is ultimately about having the courage to step forward, the humility to listen, and the discipline to build something that can succeed without you.
Perhaps that is why one of his earliest leadership lessons still resonates most:
It is not: "I did this."
It is: "We did this."
