“You can’t do it all alone. Invest in your teams so you can focus on where you add value best.”
For Moses Aman, leadership is not defined exclusively by individual achievement. It is defined by the strength of the team around you.
As Chief Financial Officer at Hima Cement Limited, Moses sits at the center of some of the organisation’s most critical decisions from financial strategy and governance to digital transformation and operational performance. But when he speaks about leadership, he rarely begins with numbers or systems. He begins with people.
In his role, Moses leads a team of about 30 professionals across multiple finance and operational functions including controlling, reporting, taxation, internal control, information technology, and digital transformation. Managing such a broad portfolio requires technical expertise, but more importantly, it requires trust, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.
One of the milestones he reflects on most is the ACCA CFO Award for Finance Transformation, earned after a two-year transformation journey within the organisation. Yet when he reflects on the award, he is quick to emphasise that it represents far more than personal recognition. To him, it symbolises the effort of a team of dedicated young professionals who work tirelessly every day to deliver results.
“Brilliant young men and women who put in a lot every day to ensure success,” he says.
By building a cohesive team culture anchored in a clear vision and mission, he has helped foster strong staff engagement and develop a pipeline of internal talent within the finance function. This people-first mindset also shapes his leadership style. He embraces participatory leadership giving team members new challenges and encouraging them to stretch beyond their comfort zones.
“Regardless of success or failure, a positive mindset allows you to learn from the experience and become a better leader,” he reflects. Over time, those lessons have shaped how he leads today.
Moses also plays an important role in shaping strategic decisions within the organisation. Through his work in commercial finance, he supports initiatives that help optimise margins while ensuring financial discipline across operations. At the same time, he has led technology-driven transformation initiatives and strengthened governance around post-implementation oversight of digital systems.
His work frequently brings him into close engagement with boards and senior leadership teams. Through these interactions, he has developed deep familiarity with board processes, internal control frameworks, and governance structures, contributing strategic insight particularly in areas such as capital allocation and risk management.
Looking at the broader leadership environment, Moses believes organisations today are navigating an increasingly complex world one often described as VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. From rapid developments in artificial intelligence to shifting geopolitical dynamics, leaders must constantly balance transformation with stability.
In such an environment, Moses believes leadership requires both strategic thinking and strong personal values. For him, ethical leadership begins with an internal compass built on honesty and respect.
“Those values guide some of the most critical decisions you will make,” he explains.
Reflecting on his journey, he says his leadership style has been shaped less by one particular individual and more by a series of experiences moments when he was given the opportunity to take on new challenges and prove himself. Those opportunities did not come easily. They required initiative (yes, asking!) and a willingness to go the extra mile without focusing solely on immediate rewards.
As a member of the League of East African Directors, Moses see an opportunity to deepen his governance expertise, expand his professional connections, and position himself for future board-level contributions. Though still early in his journey within the network, he is optimistic about the opportunities ahead.
His advice to other professionals considering joining LEAD reflects his straightforward leadership style:
“Come see for yourself, I don’t think you will regret it.”
Ultimately, Moses’ leadership philosophy reflects a simple but powerful idea.
" Organisations succeed when leaders invest in people, build strong teams, and create environments where others can thrive. "
